There’s an old saying I just made up that goes, “You can take the soldier out of the military, but you can’t take the military out of the soldier.”

It sprang to mind one morning last week as I watched Marine Corps Master Sgt. Brion Thomas try on shoes at the Allen Edmonds store in downtown D.C. He’d sampled various dress shoes before store manager Freia Boeckelmentioned that she’d have a new model in stock next month: a boot called the Dalton. In the catalogue, it looked like a combat boot mated with a brown wingtip. Perfect, said MSgt. Thomas.

Tailors Tee Up to Craft Tiger’s Custom Jacket

John H. Daniel Co.’s latest custom job suits them to a tee. The local clothing maker recently took on the task of creating a jacket for golf megastar Tiger Woods. The piece commemorated his fifth win at the Arnold Palmer Invitational, held at Bay Hill Club and Lodge in Orlando, Fla., in March. Woods won the tournament on the final hole. Big finishes have become old hat for the world’s No. 1 golfer, who captured the U.S. Open title over the weekend when he birdied the last hole in a sudden-death playoff. This isn’t the John H. Daniel has hooked up with links fashion.

“We’ve made Masters (Tournament) jackets for 20 years,” said Benton Bryan, chief operating officer for the company. “We’ve made jackets for other players as well, but it’s always an honor to do something like this. Our tailors get very excited.” A patch sewn onto the inside pocket says it all. Among the golfers who wear John H. Daniel designs are 2008 Arnold Palmer Invitational runner-up Rocco Mediate, API ninth-place finisher Eric Axley of Athens, Tenn., Nick Price, Fuzzy Zoeller and Palmer himself. Woods’ center-vented blazer is navy and crafted from Bradford-weave Super 100s wool. It sports three patch pockets, with the chest pocket boasting the Arnold Palmer Invitational logo. On the inside of the piece is top-of-the-line Bemberg lining and the inscription “custom made for Tiger Woods.” At 6-foot-1 and about 185 pounds, Woods wears a size 42 long.

The Championship jacket is preceded by another high-profile custom opportunity when John H. Daniel became the suit maker for Fox News personality Bill O’Reilly. It made 14 suits for the host of “The O’Reilly Factor.”
